To round off another gloriously head-down month, I have absconded to a waterfront town for a weekend writing retreat with one of my oldest and dearest friends. And honestly, these aren’t the words I came here to write, so let’s keep it brief.
I have two recommendations this month: two (well, three) songs that have soundtracked this phase of my life.
Allow me to recommend …
listening to “Nightshift” by Mothica, a dark pop track that’s real artist-with-a-day-job type shit. If I’m hyping myself up for some late-night writing, this is most likely on repeat.
listening to “The Louder I Call, the Faster It Runs” by Wye Oak (both versions, although I have lately been partial to the acoustic). In years of loving this song, I’ve gone through many interpretations of the title/refrain. These two stick with me now:
- The louder I call [after what I’m chasing], the faster it runs [away from me]
- The louder I call [after what I’m seeking], the faster it runs [towards me]
This summer has been a mix of both, creatively and personally. Sometimes asking for what you want is enough. Sometimes you have to go on the hunt.
